HEPA Vacuums & Wet/Dry Vacuums
Does Pullman-Holt's HEPA vacuums meet the EPA requirements for RRP?

Pullman-Holt meets or exceeds 100% of the EPA requirements for RRP.  All Pullman-Holt HEPA Vacuums are equipped with HEPA filters that individually tested and certified at 99.97% efficiency at .3 microns.

Can a HEPA filter be washed or blown off with pressurized air to be cleaned?

No. If the HEPA filter gets wet, it is ruined and must be replaced. Blowing the filter re-introduces hazardous media that was previously captured into the environment, including the air people breathe. A clogged or used HEPA filter must be immediately replaced with a new HEPA filter.

How long will the HEPA filter last?

With proper maintenance and care of pre-filters and/or primary stages of filtration, HEPA filter will last a minimum of 12 to 18 months.  If you have poor suction or air flow, there is a possibility that your HEPA filter has captured the maximum amount of particles and must be replaced.  The first step is to replace the disposable paper filter collection bag to see if this improves performance.  If replacing the paper filter bag does not improve suction, then try replacing the dacron pre-filter bag attached to the body of the HEPA filter.   If a new dacron pre-filter bag does not improve suction, the HEPA filter has reached the maximum load factor and must be replaced.

Do Pullman vacuums meet the ASTM F1471 - 09 Std Test Meth for Air Cleaning Performance?

This regulation refers to complete air-moving systems, not just HEPA filters

Can I convert a standard "dry only" or “wet/dry vacuum” into a “HEPA vacuum” by just adding a HEPA filter?

No.  The risk of unknowingly using a standard wet/dry vacuum to pick-up hazardous material would be very high.  HEPA vacuums are configured at the factory with special pre-filtration and warning labels which are not included with standard wet/dry vacuums.

Vacuum experiencing poor suction?

There are many possible causes for a loss of suction.  However, they are typically easily corrected:

The paper bag or pre-filter is full or clogged. There is an obstruction in the hose, or inlet scoop.

If vacuum has a dump valve, make sure it is closed.

A cracked, cut or leaky hose.

Check all filters.  If dirty, this will cause poor airflow.

Make sure lid/cover is secured to the vacuum tank/canister.  Check clamps, make sure they lock tightly.  Make sure all gaskets on or around lid are good, check to see if they are cut, cracked, deformed or worn air-seal gaskets between motor head and tank.

Break, hole or leak in the vacuum tank.

If vacuum is heavily used or has been in service for a long period of time, the motor brushes may be worn down and need replaced.  If motor brushes appear fine, then motor may need to replaced.

If none of the above is found and you are still experiencing a loss of suction, contact customer service (800-237-7582) for further direction.

How do I know what type and size of vacuum I need?

Depends on the application (see below):

For picking-up fine dry dust, especially from carpeted floors, try using an upright vacuum, canister vacuum or a backpack vacuum.  These vacuums are very compact and portable, and usually include paper filter bags for easy handling and disposal.   Some models are also equipped with above floor cleaning tools which make them effective for all around general cleaning.

For picking up floor stripping solutions, industrial liquids, and flood (high volume water recovery), we suggest wet/dry vacuums, front-mounted squeegee vacuums, and pump-out vacuums.  Some models will include above floor cleaning tools.

For picking up wet or dry materials in a general industrial "shop" environment, use any of our wet/dry tank vacuums.

For picking up hazardous material, i.e. asbestos, lead, silica, mold, and biohazards, use a HEPA Vacuum that is equipped with an individually tested and certified HEPA filter.   Some hazardous material pick-up requires the use of water or a surfactant to reduce the possibility of airborne dust, forexample asbestos abatement.  For these type of applications, we suggest a a HEPA Vacuum that is equipped with a wet shut-off module.

How often do I need the change the pre-filter?

Check the pre-filters anytime there is a loss of suction.  Changing pre-filters, including the disposable paper filter bag, will correct over 80% of performance problems.  The increase air flow and productivity from changing pre-filters often will more than make-up for any additional cost.  Some pre-filters like our dacron bag can be laundered and re-used when they become dirty or clogged.

How often do I need to change the filter?

This depends on the type of material being recovered, the number of hours in operation and adherence to suggested periodic maintenance procedures. To maximize the life of all pre-filters and HEPA filters, we suggest using disposable enclosed paper filter bags.

Can I purchase extra tools and hoses for my vacuum?

Yes, Pullman-Holt offers a broad range of vacuum attachments. Vacuum attachments, i.e. wands, hoses and pick-up tools (either 1.25” or 1.50” in diameter). Most commercial/industrial vacuums use 1.5” attachments. Domestic or household vacuums use 1.25” attachments. Many Pullman-Holt attachments are compatible with many other commercial/industrial vacuums.

Can I extend the length of my vacuum hose?

Most Pullman-Holt Vacuums are equipped with a 10-foot hose. It is possible to connect a series of hoses together to increase the working range of the vacuum. However, for all types of pick-up materials, wet suggest hoses that are not in excess of 30-feet in length, since this can result in a significant loss of airflow.

Can I get replacement parts or filters for my HEPA vacuum?

Yes, virtually all parts and components used in the manufacturing of all our vacuums are available for purchase. All filter components, for both current and discontinued models are stocked in our warehouse in Tampa, Florida. Please refer to our online parts schematics to identify and order the part you need.

Is there a distributor in my area?

With over 1,500 distributors, there is a good chance you will find a Pullman-Holt distributor close to you.  If not, feel free to send us an email or contact our customer service department.

What is the best HEPA vacuum for my needs?

For an economical,  general purpose HEPA vacuum for light to medium pick-up of fine, dry particles, we suggest models 390ASB and 45HEPA.  These models have been used extensively by professional and nonprofessional users.  Excellent for schools, labs, health care facilities and anywhere a compact, portable HEPA vacuum is required.  Noise suppressed motors make them ideal for use in public areas.  Since 2010, the 390ASB and 45HEPA have been purchase to meet the requirements of the EPA RRP regulations.

For professional contractors, we suggest our models 102ASB, 86ASB and 30ASB models.  These steel and steel/poly units are of extremely high quality and are designed to withstand the most abusive construction, restoration and abatement jobsites.  The 86ASB and 102ASB can also be ordered with wet shut off modules which make them ideal for asbestos removal.  These models have also been used for over 25 years by multiple agencies under the Federal Government including the U.S. Postal Service, U.S. Navy and U.S. Dept of Energy.

Vacuum does not turn on when on/off switch is activated.

Defective switch.

Problem with the power cord; check for continuity in cord.

Check for loose wire connection to switch.

Make sure there is power in outlet.

If using an extension cord, make sure it is the proper gauge.

Vacuum motor makes a loud noise:

As a motor ages with usage, the impeller fan blades in the motor may deteriorate causing breakage.  When this happens there will be sounds emerging from the motor area.  Turn the vacuum off to prevent any extensive damage to the motor.  Some vacuum repair shops may carry replacement impeller blades but more often than not, the motor will have to be replaced.

Some vacuum motors rest inside the motor head assembly in a molded area secured by "tabs" that prevent the motor from moving.  If one of the "tabs" breaks, then the motor will vibrate when running.  This will cause a rattling sound.  In this case, the motor is fine but motor housing parts, including new gaskets, will be required to secure the motor and prevent leaks.

There are sparks emitting from the motor head area:

When a vacuum is first put into service, the carbon brushes in the motor must seat themselves on the armature.  This takes only a few seconds but it sometimes generate minimal sparking or smoke.  If the sparking or smoke does not stop, turn the machine off.  Check the website for a local service center or contact customer service to arrange an evaluation by an authorized Pullman-Holt technician.  Note:  IF the vacuum is a "dry only" vacuum and you have picked up liquid, this could also be the cause.

Can I buy original factory pre-filters and paper filter bags online?

Yes, you can click on "Filters and Bags, HEPA and Non HEPA" or "Buy Bags" in our online store.  You can also search for the appropriate pre-filter or bag by clicking on your particular vacuum model.

Floor Machines & Burnishers
What is the difference between Floor Machines & Burnishers?

Single Floor Machines operate at 175 rpm; Dual Speed Floor Machines operate at either 190 or 320rpm. Single Speed and Dual Speed Floor Machines will strip, scrub and polish. In addition, they can be used to shampoo carpets or bonnet cleaning, and additionally for various sub-floor preparation, i.e. grinding and sanding.

Burnishers operate over 1,000 rpm (1090, 1500, 2000 rpm). They produce a hi-gloss “wet look” polish. The high RPMs heat today’s modern high-solids floor finishes creating a flatter surface that will reflect more of the light with less diffusion.  Because the brush spins at a faster speed than a regular floor machine, you must secure/lock the "pads" to the brush.  This is done with a "pad lock device".  It consists of 2 parts; one part is secured to the underside of the brush. After placing the "pad" onto the brush, the other part of the pad lock goes through the hole in center of the pad and either clips onto/or screws into the part of the pad lock secured to the brush.  When you purchase a pad lock device, you will receive both parts.  I most cases only one of the parts of the device has broken. Burnishers are also "belt" driven.

What is the difference between drive brush & pad driver?

The drive brush has trimmed nylon bristles designed to hold a floor pad to the floor. The pad driver functions similar to Velcro, plastic barbs are used to the secure pads to the driver block, which is attached to the floor machine’s base. Drive brushes are recognized for removing vibration and wobble. Some pad drivers allow the securing of the pad via a center locking device or nut. Caution: Do not use a drive brush without a pad, and do not store a floor machine with the drive brush attached.

The only time a pad driver is preferred over a drive brush, is with higher speed (RPM) machines, such as the 20” 1.5hp Dual Speed or Burnisher. (All drivers and/or brushes measure 2” smaller in diameter to the machine used on.)

What are the best “brush” and/or “pad” for my application?

Tile?

Mastic removal?

What is the part that secures the different floor pads to the brush?

This is called a pad lock device and comes in two pieces that thread into each other. Usually, only one of the pieces has broken. They are sold as a set and are plastic; however some older versions were constructed of metal.

If circuit breaker trips on machine?

This can be caused by a number of different reasons:

Check to make sure handle is set properly.  As the brush picks up speed it will drop to the floor.  Too much pressure on the handle will cause an excessive amp draw (more that 15amps).

If the pad drive/brush is out of alignment this will also create more amp draw and trip the breaker.  If the belt has recently been changed this may be the cause or the incorrect amount of tension in the belt.  You can adjust the belt tension by adjusting the placement of the motor on the chassis.

NEVER LEAVE the power cord hanging on the handle when starting the machine.  This will cause the breaker to trip.

If a circuit breaker trips, reset it and wait a couple of minutes before restarting the machine. When the breaker trips it is quite hot and needs to cool down. Excessive resetting and restarts without a cooling period will weaken the breaker and reduce its’ amp draw tolerance.

What size Brush do I order for my floor machine?

The key to ordering a brush is the block diameter relative to the machine size.  A brush is specified at 2" smaller than the machine.  To measure your machine, tip the machine back, expose the bottom of the chassis and measure the inside diameter.  Remember, most floor machines are listed by their cleaning path, and not the physical dimensions of the brush or chassis or deck.  This is because when you attach a brush to a machine, and when it's in the operating position, the weight of the machine causes the brush fibers to flair-out 2" or more in length.  Therefore, a machine advertised as a 18" or 20" cleaning path, should be equipped with a brush with a block that measures 16" or 18" respectively.  Just remember that the brush must fit entirely "within" the floor machine chassis.

When ordering a brush from Pullman-Holt, order the same size brush as your machine.  We have already sized the block correctly so it fits entirely within the chassis.  If you do not know the size of your Pullman-Holt floor machine, measure the inside diameter of the chassis as explained above and add 2".  This is the size brush you want to order.

Do you know what type of brush you need for the job you want to do?

Refer to the page on the website 'floor machine brushes' for a detailed list of types of flooring specific brushes, which can be used on a variety of woods, laminates, and tiles used to cover floors. It is best to consult with distributors of those individual types of flooring on the proper cleaners, brushes and floor pads for maintaining them.

What horsepower do I need to do my floors?

Pullman-Holt offers 1 ½ hp Floor Machines (not less) to avoid potential limitations related to the variety of applications the floor machine may be required for. While some competitor’s offer models having less HP, Pullman-Holt believes that may needlessly restrict that the applications in which the machine can be used.

Can I use a solution tank on my floor machine?

Solution tanks are universal and will fit on any the Pullman-Holt standard floor machine, excluding the stone care w/water feed and burnishers.

Can I clean my tile floor with a pad driver?
It is better to clean a tile floor with a scrub brush, the pads will not properly clean grout lines. Pullman-Holt offers such an accessory.

What is the best pad to use with my burnisher?

What is the best pad to use with my floor machine?

AC Motor floor machines and burnishers:

Capacitors (ac motors only) should only be tested by a qualified technician.  When replacing a capacitor it is best to get the actual reading off the capacitor itself for the "MFD" rating.  Different motors have been used on the machines and not all motors use the same capacitor ratings.  If the incorrect one is used it could damage the motor.

DC motor floor machines and burnishers

These motors do not have capacitors.  There is a rectifier in the motor that converts the AC current to DC current.  When this fails on a motor the machine will not start.

Pullman-Holt DC motor burnishers and floor machines have a 'LED lamp' on the side of the motor.  When this is lit, check the motor brushes for wear.  Replacing the motor brushes will preserve the life of the motor.

What size Pad Driver do I order for my floor machine?

The key to ordering a pad driver is the block diameter relative to the machine size.  A pad driver is specified at 1" smaller than the machine.  To measure your machine, tip the machine back, expose the bottom of the chassis and measure the inside diameter.  Remember, most floor machines are listed by their cleaning path, and not the physical dimensions of the pad driver, chassis or deck.

When ordering a pad driver from Pullman-Holt, order the same size pad driver as your machine.  We have already sized the block of the pad driver correctly to account for the 1" difference so it fits entirely within the chassis.  If you do not know the size of your Pullman-Holt floor machine, measure the inside diameter of the chassis as explained above and add 2".  This is the size pad driver you want to order.  You can order floor pads that are 1" to 2" larger than the pad driver and they will still work effectively with your floor machine.
